Case Study Competition

Take the plunge…do something dangerous, safely with BSS

Crossing the road is something everyone does without even thinking about it. However, one lapse in concentration can see you, at best in grave danger or at worst admitted to the local A&E department. Through the simple application of the ‘Green Cross Code’ suddenly it is possible to do something dangerous - safely.

Talk to a group of HSE professionals and you will find at least half of them will undertake some potentially dangerous recreational activities. Pat McLoughlin, Director of British Safety Services is a good example of this. His passion is sailing and he and a team are entering the 2007 Fastnet Race in August, pitting their wits against wind and water.

The message, “Do dangerous things safely” is at the heart of British Safety Services (BSS) competition this year. Reflecting many HSE professionals approach to enjoying life and work safely, entrants to the BSS 2007 Competition will be invited to submit an article outlining how they have, through the application of health and safety, positively impacted dangerous work environments.

The article of 1000 words or less and will be judged by a panel of eminent HSE professionals who will in turn present the winner with a salver to keep and the chance to ‘Do something Dangerous Safely’ courtesy of a ‘Red Letter’ experience.

Pat McLoughlin, Director of British Safety Services said, “We recognise that developments in health and safety over the last few years are playing an important role in improving work environments and productivity.”

“Both employers and employees are benefiting and this is an ideal opportunity to raise awareness of how health and safety has helped and how it could aid other organisations in the future.”

“I look forward to seeing a wide diversity of experiences from this competition and I am sure the winner will enjoy the trip to the IOSH conference.”

If you are interested in participating you will need to submit your case study to BSS by Friday 14th September 2007.
