Kevin Day (52 at the time of the race)
Kevin has always lived dangerously. He is a classic example of how it is possible to enter an extremely dangerous situation and do so safely. For 31 years Kevin was a serving Fire Officer and prior to that he was in the police force. He now delivers driver training to the West Midlands Fire Service.
Joining the Sea Cadets at the age of 11 started Kevin’s love of sailing and outdoor pursuits, he has dingy sailed ever since. However it was only five years ago that he progressed to larger yachts. Always competitive Kevin has ‘always fancied tackling the Fastnet, its something different” he says. He goes on to say “You can sail any time but the Fastnet is different, its four days of battling physically and mentally against the elements, highly pressurised and fraught with danger.”
Danger is something Kevin seems to thrive on not only in his work but in his relaxation hobbies. His pastimes include sailing, canoeing, climbing, mountain walking and cycling.
