When asked what attracted him to entering what is recognised as a dangerous, physically and mentally draining race, Alan’s response was “well it’s something I need to do.”
This is possibly not what you would expect to hear from a Health and Safety Manager. Dig a little deeper and you understand more about Alan. As an undoubted expert in his field he recognises the danger in any situation but also sees how to make the most of it and do so safely.
If you look at Alan’s hobbies past and present you might get a clue to what excites him - adrenaline. Sailing, walking, mountain biking and clay pigeon shooting competitively currently interest him but in is youth you would have seen him enjoy the more physical boxing and playing rugby at county level.
